Hey I just signed up to this site and haven't had much experience with DnD (I've played a couple of games of the Dragonlance RP) and i really wanted to start playing. I live in Sydney Australia and I've been looking around for a rule book and cant find any. In addition to this I've seen that there are many different rulebooks (eg version 3.5, 4.2 ect) I wanted to know if there was anywhere where i could maybe just read the rules off the net or if anyone knows where i can buy a rule book in Sydney and what version i should buy. Or if anyone was feeling really kind they could maybe just teach me the raw essentials for what i need to start playing.

www.d20srd.org is a nice reference site that has most of the rules-- everything that's legally allowed to be distributed. However, important stuff like the flavor text and descriptions of things and the experience needed to gain levels don't fall under that category.
The book you want is the Player's Handbook version 3.5, but as for finding it in Sydney, I wouldn't know, I'm in the U.S. If you couldn't find it in local bookstores and there aren't any gaming or hobby shops around you might be able to order it online, just have to wait for it to ship

Thanks heaps ill read up on that website now and i might go and hunt around again for the 3.5 rule book next time i get into the city. Theres sure to be plenty of places that will sell it.....hopefully.
